In addition to synthetic tests, I used this processor as my main gaming chip for a few days to informally measure real world performance, while noting any games where performance was particularly exceptional in either direction.

Then when running the single core test, we saw a sustained frequency of 5 GHz, so just a 200 MHz increase over the all core. The peak operating temperature also dropped to 66c. Benchmarks Calling these test scores for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D uninspiring for the money wouldn’t be too far off of the mark. We don’t say such things lightly, but all of the processors we just named cost less—some, like the Ryzen 5 7600 and the Core i5-12600K, by hundreds of dollars. Regardless, the Core i5-12600K had as much as a 12% performance advantage in select tests, and the two chips effectively tied in the best test-case scenario for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. The cheaper Ryzen 7 7700X was also faster than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D by as much as 24%. Gaming Tests

Verdict: Simply Too Much Cash for This Much Cache

Visual performance in general tended to be a bit better on the IGPs on competing Intel chips here as well, so if you are buying a processor and don’t want to buy a graphics card, it’s worth keeping this in mind. Power and Thermal Performance We did measure total system power usage for this game and here the 7800X3D configuration consumed slightly more power than the 7700X, a 4% rise, but we saw a 27% increase in performance, so the 3D V-Cache part was significantly more efficient. It also consumed 21% less power than the 13900K, despite delivering 13% more frames, so while the 13900K was quite impressive in terms of performance, power efficiency is just horrible. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is a gaming-focused processor, and there’s no contest in that regard. It’s the fastest gaming CPU you can buy, matching and sometimes even outperforming the more expensive Ryzen 9 7950X3D. You lose a lot in productivity performance, but for gamers, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is still plenty fast. As for power consumption, we're going to show total system usage as we feel that's more relevant to someone looking at buying this CPU. These results are heavily influenced by performance, as in how many frames the RTX 4090 is able to pump out, so do keep that in mind. That said, the 7800X3D was 3% faster than the 13900K in this game while using 20% less power, so that's a big deal when it comes to thermal output. In any case, these chips will be sure to provide some new qualities in performance and pricing. If you look at my suite of tests, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is a decimal point away from the Ryzen 9 7950X3D, and that’s just due to rounding. Outside of that, it blows past the previous generation and competition from Intel. Over the Core i9-13900K, it’s 13% faster, and over last-gen’s Ryzen 7 5800X3D, it’s 20% faster. No question, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D is thegaming CPU to buy right now. Should you buy the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D?
