About this deal

Does this really matter and is it a good barometer of quality? Not really in my opinion, but it can be used lightly. The Masottina Prosecco may only be a DOC but it’s drinking right alongside, if not better than its Kirkland counterpart. Pale green. Crisp lemony nose, very clean. The palate has a little touch of sweetness, with a fresh, pithy lemon acidity that leaves it dry and moreish. 86

Instantly defined and distinctive, with bold orchard fruits, and lots of tang and lemony zip. But there is subtle minerality here too, playing against the sweetness of the wine, the fruit and a lemony twist. Lovely length and definition. 90/100 There is a distinctive rise in quality and interest when one looks at Superiore DOCG wines, as our 2023 Gold and Master medal-winners show. These wines, which come from the caldera and rolling hills in the heart of Treviso around Conegliano-Valdobbiadene and Asolo, are sensationally delicious. From the single vineyard monopole Giardino this has 20g/l of sugar, and a fresh fruit salad nose with melon and pear and just a a hint of more exotic peach and mango. The palate is basically dry and fresh, the cool, quite mineral acidity slices through a peach down fruitiness and ripeness. 89/100 This is a big, creamy, fruity wine, with abundant ripe citrus, peach nectar, and candied grapefruit and orange peel. It’s an aperitif wine that dal Bianco suggested pairing with fish or mushroom risotto.

These simpler styles of Prosecco wines indicate that, while the overall level of quality is good, not all Proseccos are created equal, so a level of attention in selection is required. Youthful age guarding the freshness is always relevant for these DOC wines. Most of these wines are produced in an Extra Dry style, with around 12g/l-17g/l residual sugar, which suits the peachy fruit flavour well. These are easy-drinking, crowd-pleasing wines, perfect for a spring day among the daffodils and cherry trees. Champagne method Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Noir. Some yeasty, softly peachy fruit, with a touch of caramel. The fruit on the palate is nicely mature and apricotty, with a big core of lemony, quite waxy character. Quite powerful and decisive. 91/100 And finally, for your delectation: a bubbly dessert Moscato from Asti, in Piemonte—to end on a truly sweet note. What: A consistent high-performer with Laithwaites, Alessio Rossetto's easy-drinking Prosecco is full on sparkle and flavour, with creamy ripe peach, stone fruit and a hint of pear. This is a lovely fun Prosecco that covers all bases and occasions, and the full Spumante bubble makes it great for special occasions. The Adami Extra Dry has aspumy mousse with flavors of peach, ripepear, and yellow apple. Grassy herbs and yellow citrus pith add bite.

Levels of production have increased dramatically in recent years, and demand, not only in Italy, but especially in the UK and the US, and nowadays also in France, seems to be absorbing the supply. Everyone loves Prosecco. This Masottina Prosecco is a DOC Prosecco. The difference is that a DOCG Prosecco has been approved by a tasting panel, and therefore the wine is guaranteed to taste as it should. What: Prosecco connoisseurs (including us) rave about this Tesco Prosecco, not only because it tastes incredible, but because it’s just a tenner a bottle! The quality of the grapes, which come from the slopes of Valdobbiadene, translate into superior flavours, including peach, pear and white blossom, which go particularly well with canapès and summer salads. That’s not to say you can’t toast with it on Christmas morning, though – this Prosecco is definitely an all-season fizz. The single-vineyard wine is stonier, evenmonumental, with a quiet minerality and savory finish. It’sis a food wine, and dal Bianco suggested pairing it with something delicate, likefish crudo. These notes accompany our in-depth feature on Prosecco.
