This is not a ‘how to help’ manual; rather it is a questioning, curious, explorative and challenging companion. It aims to be your guide along whichever route you are taking, answer your questions and help you decide if you want to take your interest in counselling to the next steps. First Steps in Counselling remains the text of choice for students and tutors of introductory courses. When successful, treatment can change how a client thinks, feels, and behaves regarding an upsetting experience or situation (Krishnan, n.d.). While the counselor and client continue to build a beneficial, collaborative relationship, another process is underway: problem assessment. Over the last few decades, research has confirmed that “group therapy is as effective as individual therapy for many conditions, including depression, obesity, and social anxiety” (Novotney, 2019). Early on in counseling, it became clear that they both needed time to ponder some serious questions, including: While we often see counseling and psychotherapy as interchangeable, there are subtle distinctions. Stage four: Counseling intervention Our practitioners will listen to your experience and work with you to understand how you have been feeling. Together we will decide what sort of help might work best for you.
