About this deal

A 63 watt-hour battery powers the Dell Latitude 5420. That’s not massive, but it feels above average in 2021. Most premium and luxury laptops have cut battery size in an effort to reduce weight. The Latitude 5420 we tested had Intel’s Core i7-10610U quad-core processor. It’s an upgrade from the Core i3 processor found in the base configuration, but it certainly didn’t feel like it.

I do have a few minor qualms with the keyboard. For one, some of the keys, especially the arrow keys, are undersized, which could be a problem for those who work with gloves on. Also, the optional handle installed on the front of the laptop doesn't make for the most comfortable wrist rest, and the RGB lighting settings are very basic. Smaller and lighter: We’ve shrunk the dimensions of the Latitude 5000 series without sacrificing power or performance. I was also impressed by the screen's excellent color reproduction and blinding brightness. The red jumpsuit worn by our protagonist had a rich tone, while the giant lightning bolt on his chest looked like it was going to pierce my screen and zap me. Whether you're a first responder or a soldier stationed overseas, the Latitude 5420 Rugged has you covered with its blindingly bright display, durable chassis and impressive battery life. The Latitude 5420 offers a lot for its sky-high price -- most important, the reassurance that your data is safely housed within its rugged chassis. Accidental Damage-Additional Information: Accidental Damage Service excludes theft, loss, and damage due to fire, flood or other acts of nature, or intentional damage. Customer may be required to return damaged unit to Dell. Limit of 1 qualified incident per contract year. From the bumpers covering each corner to its magnesium-alloy materials, this laptop's utilitarian design may as well have been contrived in a secret military lab. Exposed screws, geometric angles and chunky bezels assure the user that no expense was spared in creating the Latitude 5420's practically indestructible chassis. New ExpressConnect automatically joins the strongest access point in the office and directs bandwidth to critical applications, wherever you work. For that reason, the Latitude 5420 Rugged is the better option for most people, and a highly recommended laptop for the world's toughest jobs. Dell Optimizer extends runtime and improves battery performance by adapting to your patterns. ExpressCharge Boost delivers up to 35% charge in about 20 minutes, or up to 80% charge in an hour with ExpressCharge. * These results come with an important caveat. Dell has updated the Latitude 5420 with models that offer new Intel Core processors and Intel Iris Xe graphics. We haven’t tested the Latitude 5420 in this configuration, but we have tested laptops with similar hardware. We expect the new models to provide a small boost in processor performance and a significant boost in graphics performance.

In brief, stay away from the Dell Latitude 5420. This is not the work-from-home laptop you’re looking for. That beats other long-lasting Windows laptops we’ve recently tested, such as Lenovo’s Yoga 9i and the Razer Book 13. Most owners can expect the Latitude 5420 to endure a full workday of constant use on the go. Audio quality is not where we’d expect the Latitude 5420 to excel. Work laptops often don’t prioritize audio, and this laptop makes no claims about enhanced sound.

Ports & Slots

Modern connectivity is provided by twin Thunderbolt 4 ports with Power Delivery and DisplayPort mode. These versatile ports can connect to a variety of USB-C or Thunderbolt devices, can charge the laptop, and can power an external monitor. Also pre-installed on the Latitude 5420 is a program for adjusting the laptop's discrete AMD graphics settings and an app called eGalaxDr.Touch, which lets you optimize the touch screen for use with gloves, a pen or in wet conditions. on Dell internal analysis using publicly available specs in August 2023 comparing maximum effective capacity for PowerStore 1200 and FlashArray //X20. Assumes average 4:1 data reduction for PowerStore, 5:1 for Pure Storage. Actual results vary. From the bumpers covering each corner to its magnesium-alloy materials, this laptop's utilitarian design may as well have been contrived in a secret military lab. Nothing seems wrong with the Latitude 5420’s touchpad at a glance. It looks spacious and its plastic feel, although not enjoyable, is hardly unusual for a Windows business laptop.

Up-level your presentation: Present flawlessly with the optional FHD webcam and high-performing mics. The Latitude 5420 performed equally well on our synthetic benchmark test, topping the premium laptop average (88,502) with a score of 117,381 on the 3DMark Unlimited test. Connect confidently: Stay connected with up to 450 Mbps LTE mobile broadband speeds. Wi-Fi 6E allows 7 additional channels (in 6GHz band) for more bandwidth which provides faster, smoother Wi-Fi, especially in high-density areas. * Travel with ease with new eSIM technology that connects to more global carriers without having to switch SIM cards. * Those who work outdoors don't always have access to a power outlet. It's a good thing, then, that the Latitude 5420 lasts an entire day on a charge when equipped with a swappable secondary 3-cell 51Whr battery. The rugged machine endured for 9 hours and 45 minutes on our Laptop Mag Battery Test, which involves continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. Just be careful cranking the display to maximum brightness because it could take a serious toll on battery life. The Dell Latitude 5420 is not entirely hopeless. It has a great keyboard, excellent connectivity, and good battery life. Its 1920 x 1080 resolution, matte display coat, and good contrast ratio make a decent first impression. To its credit, the display works well for its narrow intended purpose. It’s readable, resists glare, and is bright enough to use in any office. Our most sustainable Latitude: The Latitude 5000 Series use 21% bioplastics from trees within the lid by utilizing Tall Oil from the papermaking process. * The overall manufacturing process creates a lower carbon, energy and water footprint, reducing CO2 emissions equal to 24.2 million miles driven, saving energy to power 5,564 homes for a year, and conserving enough water to fill 226 Olympic-size pools. * The fans inside the Latitude 5420 did a reasonable job of keeping this beast cool, but the underside warmed to uncomfortable temperatures. After playing a 15-minute HD video in full screen, the bottom of the laptop, near the hinge, reached 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Fortunately, that was the only location on the laptop that breached our 95-degree comfort threshold. The Latitude's touchpad peaked at just 86 degrees, while the center of the keyboard remained a bearable 94 degrees. It’s honestly the worst touchpad we’ve used in years. We became so frustrated that, at one point during testing, our reviewer rage-quit the laptop entirely and walked off to finish the day’s work on a desktop.

And although its 512GB PCIe NVMe Class 40 SSD couldn't keep up with the category average (526.7 megabytes per second) on our File Transfer Test, it still duplicated 4.97GB of mixed-media files in a reasonably fast time of 10 seconds for a rate of 508 MBps. Nothing about the Latitude 5420 suggests it might be a good laptop for anything unrelated to work, so perhaps it’s no surprise the display fails to hold up. I typed at 119 words per minute with a 95 percent accuracy rate on the 10fastfingers.com typing test, which matches my average on both accounts. The display covers 110 percent of the sRGB color gamut, according to our colorimeter measurements. Although that's slightly below the premium laptop average (117 percent), the panel never looked dull. The redesigned Latitude E5420 is ideal for professionals looking for a budget-friendly blend of mobility and at-your-desk computing. Apple Silicon still has it beat, though. The MacBook Pro we recently tested handled 14 hours of our battery life, a full four and a half hours more than the Latitude 5420. The speakers sound powerful Hard drive retention: Hard drive retention is not available on models with a soldered hard drive, including XPS 9315 2in1, Chromebooks or Venue tablets, except the Venue 11 Pro.
