About this deal

Whilst the artbook has a great front cover I just don’t see anything exclusive enough in this box set to warrant such a steep price tag. The 4K disc of The Last Jedi is newly authored—it no longer includes Dolby Vision HDR (per Disney’s new norm). All of the Blu-rays in the set are newly-authored discs—they are not the same as those released previously. The Last Jedi movie Blu-ray now includes the Score-only version of the film and its Bonus Blu-ray now includes the Meet the Porgs retail exclusive featurette. Most (but not quite all) of the previous Blu-ray special features are included in this set. Most of the previous DVD special features are not included—and of course, the original unaltered theatrical cuts of Star Wars, Empire, and Jedi are not included.

It’s the first time we’ve see the Prequel Trilogy on 4K and look impressive but despite being made more recently they don’t match the amazing quality of the Original Trilogy. Rey and Kylo Ren battling it out on the ruins of the Death Star beside monstrous seas is also a treat for the eyes and the ears. We suspect this has something to do with the fact they were all shot digitally and not on film like the original movies. HDR also adds so much to the movie and offers great contrast to still appreciate the 4K detail even in the shadows and in brighter areas of the picture that would otherwise be washed out. Secondly the bit rate (the number of bits to provide the video and audio quality) is much higher off a disc than a streaming service.

Colours are rich, vivid and bold, and graded with perfection, lasers are a good shade of red, light sabres glow, flesh tones remain natural, while the greens of the Death Star lasers are punchy. Of course, we do have to contend with the recolouring given to the last Blu-ray, so while the purple of the sunset over Tatooine, with Luke looking into the distance as the music swells might be gorgeous, it is still the wrong colour …. But what was also amazing was how much the HDR improved the image and showed off shapes and objects in the shadows we normally would have missed. Blu-ray (top) v 4K Showcase scenes: The opening shot of Star Wars with the large starship rumbling overhead never looked or sounded better. Also on 4K UHD for the first time is Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens along with Rogue One which is set just before the original 1977 Star Wars film in the story’s timeline. For Star Wars fans it is definitely worth your while to invest in the 4K discs because they offer far more video and audio quality that even 4K streaming versions of the films which are currently available on Disney+.Before we go into the reasons why we think this particular set is daylight robbery let me first give you an overview of what you are set to receive in the 4K Skywalker Saga Box set along with a good length documentary or two per disc. This saga is steeped in history yet what accompanies the set doesn’t honour or make that history feel special whatsoever. Wonderfully remastered with a fine attention to detail, The Columbia Classics Box Set covered such diverse films as: A League of their Own, Gandhi, Dr Strangelove, Mr Smith goes to Washington, Jerry Maguire, and Lawrence of Arabia; here’s what we said about David Lean's masterpiece:
