About this deal

Our panel – made up of 10-accredited spirits experts and rum-loving consumers – put 35 spiced rums to the test, spanning supermarket steals to big-brand bottles. This is a sensational Cuban spiced rum that is wonderfully unique, not only because of the local produce used to create its incredible depth of flavour and intensity but it is dry. Again, there's something with pineapple and coffee, subtle coffee notes, that just go quite well together. There’s plenty of depth too, thanks to the addition of herbaceous, earthy spices such as cardamom, cinnamon and ginger.

I want the world to move away from the cliche that we Cubans are all domino players, cigar smokers, salsa dancers when there's so much more diversity than that. They were on the lookout for smooth, easy-drinking styles, with well-balanced sweetness, punchy spices and fruit. Robberstad’s background is in drinks, first a premium mineral water for restaurants and then liqueurs like Cherry Heering and Asanti cognac liqueur. Black Tears is crafted from a base of dry silver rum that is aged in cask and infused with coffee beans, cacao and aji dulce peppers. It's hard to, the vanilla actually is really, really subtle in the background, not overly up in your face at all. We unexpectedly found this smelt of candy floss and sponge cake, with a slightly synthetic tropical note to it.

We think it's an excellent cocktail rum, with enough to stand-out (think cinnamon bark, crystallised ginger, candied orange and natural vanilla), while seamlessly blending with other ingredients. From the carefully selected seductive spices, to the connection to Cuban Vigia – a seal of high-quality rum. I was working in the restaurant's storage room for my social service and on top of that I started getting into the mixology aspect at the bar. Cuban mixology is of course iconic but Monica wants people to look past the stereotypical tourist spots of El Floridita and La Bodeguita del Medio and focus on the new generation of bartending that is experiencing a wave of innovation.

The all-important spice comes via warming cinnamon and ginger on the finish, which together ensures a winning base for your next pina colada or mai tai. It’s used to great effect in this cask-aged Bajan rum, which is macerated with ingredients from around the world. Made in small batches and infused with pineapple, banana, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon and fiery ginger, this Caribbean-inspired rum comes via Salford. Nothing to be consumed on the rocks but I can imagine that this one would be a good choice for desserts.
